Save Siberian Tigers from getting Extinct

Recently the news of Siberian tigers in the verge of extinction has drawn quite a good amount of media attention worldwide. But is this a new topic to discus and debate on? For the last couple of years, we have been hearing the scientists from different countries continuously addressing the governments to take steps to save animals from illegal poaching and unscrupulous murdering. However, till date, no proper action is taken to ward off unnecessary killing of some animals.

The news that the population of Siberian tigers is dropping sharply, with researchers blaming the poachers who are killing the feline for its pelt and bones, had to come now or a few years later. The way climate is changing, with global warming and increased urbanization creeping in the natural habitats of animals, its no surprise that very soon it will become difficult for the environmentalists to save animal.

Russian President Vladimir Putin had fitted a radio-tracking collar in a rare Siberian tiger in 2008 for the purpose of following the animal’s prowling through Russia's wild Far East. However, sad to know, the tiger has vanished without leaving any trace of its whereabouts since mid-September this year. The fear of some Russian conservationists’ that Siberian tiger may be approaching extinction is no less than a hard reality that seems good if accepted.

In a report coordinated by the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS), Russian government and non-governmental organizations, only 56 large felines have been found to reside in the country’s Far East. It represents a 41% decline from a 12-year average of around 95 tigers in a monitoring area of around 15% of the tigers’ total natural habitat, the report said.

Hope we don’t get surprised if, after some years, we get to see the name of Siberian tigers in the extinct animals list. What do you say?
